D02: NAIROBI/NANYUKI – SAMBURU WILDLIFE SANCTUARY (DIST. 325km) |
L/D |
Drive through the countryside to arrive at the Samburu Wildlife
Santuary, in time for lunch and a noon game drive. After the day’s
game drives, dinner and overnight at the Safari Lodge
Park Information:
Samburu Wildlife Sanctuary lies to the North of the Equator, 325 km
from Nairobi. The 104sq Sanctuary is within the hot and arid
fringes of the vast Northern region of Kenya – the land of the
colorful Samburu people, who are close relatives of the Maasai.
This sanctuary harbors a number of wildlife species rarely found
elsewhere. These include Grevy's Zebra, the Reticulated Giraffe and
the Beisa Oryx, all species are found only north of the equator. The
long-necked Gerenuk is a graceful antelope which spends much of its
time in a bi-pedal stance seeking succulence amongst the withered
scrub which dots this harsh terrain.
Samburu is scenically and faunally dramatic for most part of the
year. It is serene under the unsympathetic equatorial sun. But
relief comes from the wide swathe of the Ewaso Nyiro River which
rises some hundreds of kilometers to the west on the foothills of
the Aberdares and which vanishes beyond Samburu in the recesses of
the Lorian swamp

Park Information:
This 1510 sq km Masai Mara is the best of the Kenyan Game Reserves
which offers a great game experience. This is the most famous and
most visited reserve in Kenya. It offers breathtaking views (seen in
the film, `Out of Africa’). The highlight of the Mara is undoubtedly
the great migration of Wildebeest which move north from the
Serengeti in July, August & September in search of lush grass. They
return South in October before the rainy season. The grasslands are
also home to the big cats, like the Lions, Cheetahs, and Leopards.
Elephant, Buffalo, Zebra, and Hippopotamus roam in large herds while
the Topi, Impala, and Coke's Hartebeest are also abundant. Masai
Mara has the largest population of Lions.
